NZ Seafood Industry Keen to See the Nuts and Bolts of New Funding
15 May 2006
The seafood industry welcomes the Minister of Fisheries’ support for an objective based approach to fisheries management.
“This is essential if fisheries plans are to be successful,” Owen Symmans, New Zealand Seafood Industry Council Chief Executive, said in commenting on Mr Anderton’s announcement that additional funds will be made available to develop fishery management plans.
“We also welcome the Minister’s comment that it is ‘vital that Government works in partnership with the fishing industry’. The industry looks forward to working with Government in a process which provides accountability and transparency.
“Funding for the Ministry of Fisheries’ involvement in the development of the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Strategy should mean that the perspective of sustainable utilization, and tools other than marine reserves, will be taken into account when planning MPA’s.
“We will be pleased to see the nuts and bolts of how the new funding will be applied,” concluded Mr Symmans.
