Beca recognises key achievers
More promotions at Beca
A further five key promotions have been announced by engineering, planning and project management consultancy Beca to
the positions of directors in Auckland. “These promotions recognise that the quality of our work is dependent on our
people. They are key to our business,” says Richard Aitken, Beca’s group chief executive. The following five Beca people
span the company’s project management, building services, transportation and environmental engineering divisions:
Helen Ferner, Project Director
After working in the US for 10 years, Helen returned to New Zealand in 1994 and joined Beca in Wellington. She was
appointed a trustee of Karori Wildlife Sanctuary when the trust was founded in 1995 - a role she still holds. More
recently Helen was project manager for the just completed Pier A Segregation Project for Auckland International Airport
Ltd - a project role that brought her to Auckland 18 months ago. She’s currently engaged in the next stage of the
expansion of the Auckland International Airport Terminal Early Arrivals project. Earlier, Helen secured and completed
the design of the seismic strengthening of San Quentin prison and the structural design of the Sun Microsystems San
Leandro Campus, both designed in New Zealand for California-based clients.
Paul Collister, Project Director
Paul has worked in Beca’s project management section in Auckland for over 15 years, having started as a structural
engineer 20 years ago. He has worked on the Ford Motor Company Expansion at Wiri in the late ‘80s, the development of
Avondale College following a disastrous fire in the early ‘90s, New Zealand Steel’s Melter Reline in the late ‘90s and
more recently, AUT’s Learning Centre and the new Greenlane Clinical Centre for Auckland District Health Board. Paul is
currently project manager for the $200 million University of Auckland Business School.
Martin Wemyss, Technical Director - Building Services
Martin is a longstanding member of the Beca building services team, having ‘cut his teeth’ in the Wellington and
Melbourne offices before joining the Auckland team in 1982. He has accumulated over 25 years of building services
consulting experience over a wide variety of market sectors. Over this period Martin has been a champion of Beca ‘best
practice’ through the development of much of the company’s building services technical guides and specifications, and
contributing to the development of the Beca quality system. Martin has played a key role in major projects for Auckland
International Airport Ltd, SkyCity Casino, and Auckland’s iconic SkyTower, as well as developing Beca’s longstanding
partnership with those clients.
Ian Bone, Technical Director - Transportation
Ian specialises in transport planning, and has over 30 years’ experience in New Zealand, Asia, the Pacific, Africa and
the Middle East. His areas of work include multi-modal transport planning and design, transport operational studies, and
computer modelling of transport networks and systems. His projects include New Zealand National Highway Strategy,
multidisciplinary feasibility studies in Fiji, Laos and Sri Lanka; multi-modal transport planning in Papua New Guinea,
Laos, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Tuvalu, East Timor and the Marshall Islands; project planning for SH1 (Albany to Puhoi) motorway,
and for various highway improvement projects in India, Papua New Guinea, Africa, the Pacific and the Middle East.
Ian Garside, Technical Director - Environmental Engineering; Manager - Auckland Water
Ian has worked extensively in the water and wastewater industry in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, and undertaken
projects in the US, Spain and Singapore. He has led numerous projects to develop and upgrade water and wastewater
network systems and has expertise in modelling and planning of sewer networks. Ian is a member of the Chartered
Institution of Water and Environment Management and the New Zealand Water and Wastes Association and is experienced in
project management. His key projects include Global Wastewater Options for Metrowater, Project Storm for Watercare
Services, and Whangamarino WTP for Waikato District Council.
