Singapore Airlines Celebrates 30 Years Commitment and Service to Kiwis
This week Singapore Airlines commemorates a very special anniversary in New Zealand. On Thursday 4 May 2006 Singapore
Airlines flight SQ285 will land in Auckland marking thirty years of service between Auckland and Singapore.
The 30th anniversary celebration will take place at Auckland International Airport, with a Maori powhiri to be performed
as the aircraft approaches the gate – similar to the powhiri performed when Singapore Airlines landed on New Zealand
soil for the first time.
Mr Sak-Hin Chin, General Manager New Zealand, says the powhiri symbolises Singapore Airlines’ commitment to New Zealand.
“We are delighted to be able to celebrate thirty years of service to New Zealanders and believe our ties to the country
will be well represented in our celebrations,” says Mr Chin.
“We believe in striving for excellence in every detail, on every flight, with every passenger – from our airport lounges
to the smallest details on our flights, we aim to rise to each occasion and deliver the Singapore Airlines experience of
excellence.”
Singapore Airlines have plans in place to celebrate their 30 years anniversary and say thank you to the city of
Auckland, with a spectacular fireworks event planned at Auckland Viaduct on 5 May 2006 at 8.30pm.
Singapore Airlines dedication to the New Zealand market has seen its services to the public steadily increase since the
opening of its first sales office in Auckland in 1970.
From Singapore Airlines initial twice-weekly services in 1976, today the Airline operates 12 times weekly non-stop
B777-200ER / B747-400 services from Auckland to Singapore and a daily B777-200ER service from Christchurch.
Two full freighter aircraft, MEGA ARK Boeing 747’s carrying up to 110 tonnes of cargo, fly out of Auckland International
Airport each week. The belly-hold of an additional 19 passenger flights is also used for cargo. Singapore Airlines Cargo
transports 20 per cent of the total airfreight out of Auckland*.
Singapore Airlines offices (including its cargo subsidiary) employ a total of 85 staff, dedicated to the ongoing
provision of services to Kiwis.
