Serial Numbers on Some Parallel Imported Canon Cameras Sold in NZ Don’t Match Original Numbers
An investigation by camera manufacturer Canon NZ has revealed some concerns about the serial numbers on parallel imported cameras.
Following the receipt of several Digital SLR cameras for repair in recent weeks, it has revealed some serial number tampering. The cameras in question have had serial numbers removed or forged. Following discussions with some customers, Canon technical staff established that the products had been purchased from parallel importer outlets.
Canon New Zealand purchased 12 EOS 350D Canon cameras from parallel importers’ retail outlets in Auckland and checked the serial numbers to ascertain where the cameras had originated from.
The external serial numbers on the camera bodies of six of the 12 twelve cameras were not legitimate Canon serial numbers. Further checking showed that the internal serial number on the six cameras did not match the external serial number. In addition the packaging of the cameras was not consistent with the standard factory output.
Canon New Zealand managing director Tony Wills was not at this stage prepared to speculate on why there are inconsistencies with the serial numbers or packaging, but stated that Canon New Zealand were continuing investigations and will be working closely with the respective authorities in both Japan and New Zealand.
