How EnviroSmart is your business?
Would your business benefit from a competitive edge, saving money, improving its environmental performance and help with
compliance?
EnviroSmart is an exciting new initiative – launched in February 2006, and promoted by 22 Councils in nine regions
throughout New Zealand – to improve the environmental performance and resource efficiency of businesses. It is being
delivered by Landcare Research.
The Prime Minister praised the EnviroSmart initiative at its launch last month, saying it was a fantastic example of
thinking globally and acting locally. She said that most businesses would like to be more environmentally friendly but
need the sort of guidance offered by the EnviroSmart programme to help them along.
The EnviroSmart programme will assist businesses in using resources such as energy and water efficiently, avoid or
reduce all forms of waste, produce and purchase environmentally sound products and services and achieve the recognised
Enviro-Mark NZ certification to the Gold level.
The programme provides support to participating businesses through consultancy advice, site visits and workshops.
Building, manufacturing and communications’ industries are just some of the businesses that will directly benefit
themselves and the environment. Greater Wellington Chairman Ian Buchanan agrees EnviroSmart is a tremendous opportunity
for businesses to operate sustainably. “Case studies from participating businesses in the pilot programme show there are
tremendous savings to be made by businesses - while also benefiting the environment.”
Porirua City Council, Hutt City Council and Greater Wellington are working together to promote EnviroSmart in the
Wellington region. Any local councils or businesses interested in knowing more about the EnviroSmart programme, should
visit the website at www.envirosmart.co.nz or contact Michelle Hayward, Greater Wellington.
