NZ Seafood Industry Council Supports Long Term Sustainability
24 March 2006
The New Zealand Seafood Industry is very pleased with the Minister of Fisheries’ announcement on increasing rock lobster
total allowable catch (TAC) for Otago and Southland yesterday, said New Zealand Seafood Industry Council Chief Executive
Owen Symmans.
“This is proof that sensible management of fisheries works,” Mr Symmans said. “The rock lobster fisheries in these areas
have endured economically difficult cuts to the TAC in the past in favour of rebuilding the fishery. It’s very positive
to see those choices paying off now.”
It is disappointing that the Minister has reduced the Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) for Southern Blue Whiting.
This is an important fishery for some companies and the reduction will have significant economic impacts for those
involved, Mr Symmans said.
