Ruawai Sharemilkers Take Supreme Top of the North Title
Ruawai, Northland sharemilkers Paddy (35) and Teri (32) Gordon took the 2006 Top of the North Sharemilker of the Year title at an awards function in Muana tonight.
The Gordons are 50:50 sharemilkers, with 180 cows producing 72,674kg/ms on a 59 hectare property in Ruawai owned by Peter Flood.
The couple were first time entrants in the awards.
“We entered to meet other like minded people within the dairy industry and to benchmark our farming business against other sharemilkers,” Teri Gordon said.
The couple spent two years lower order sharemilking for Teri’s parents in Dargaville. They gained their current 50:50 position two years ago.
Paddy and Teri believe working well as a team and the fact they complement each other’s abilities is a strength in their business.
“We are both focussed on heading in the same direction and this allows us to achieve our goals,” Teri said. “We work to a high standard in all areas of farming to achieve high productivity which allows our business to grow.”
Their future farming goal is to achieve family farm ownership with financial independence.
The Gordons both enjoy discussion groups and seminars in dairy farming circles.
“We also like spending time with our five month old daughter,Sinead and have a shared interest in fishing and travel,” said Teri.
Paddy enjoys rugby as a player and supporter while Teri likes horse riding both competitively and for pleasure.
The Gordons will now go forward to represent Top of the North in the New Zealand Sharemilker of the Year national final to be held in Christchurch on May 13, competing for a national prize pool of nearly $60,000.
The 2006 New Zealand Sharemilker of the Year Competition is run in association with Federated Farmers of New Zealand (Inc) and is sponsored by Dairy InSight, ACC, Bank of New Zealand, Blue Wing Honda, Dexcel, Ecolab, Fonterra, Livestock Improvement and Ravensdown.
