2006 Census Launch: January 2006
31 January 2006 Public Information Campaign Launched
Statistics Minister Clayton Cosgrove today launched the 2006 Census of Population and Dwellings public information
campaign in Auckland. The theme of the campaign is: "We're going to grow, so we need to know."
"For New Zealand’s population, the future starts now. The trends we see today – the changes in birth rates, in
migration, and in how people see themselves – become the New Zealand of tomorrow," Clayton Cosgrove said. Government
Statistician Brian Pink said, "The aim of the 2006 Census public information campaign, which begins on 1 February, is to
let the public know about the 7 March census.
Information will be on television, radio and in newspapers." The campaign will explain when the census is, why it is
being held, why it is important that everyone takes part, and what census information is used for. The television
advertisements emphasise the use of data at a more personal level by showing ways that ordinary New Zealanders benefit
from census data. In addition, there will be information on when to expect a census collector to visit and where to find
out more about the census.
"The public information campaign will raise people's awareness of the census, guide them in taking part and allow to
them to see the benefits of the information it produces. We want people to be motivated to participate," said Brian
Pink.
"The census is important because it is the only survey that covers the total population. Census information is used in
decisions that affect every city, town, suburb, rural area and neighbourhood in New Zealand. Held five yearly, it
enables population trends to be identified and services and facilities to be put in place to meet people's needs."
Under the Statistics Act 1975, all information collected may be used only for statistical purposes, must be kept
confidential, and no information that could identify an individual may be published or otherwise disclosed. The first
information from the 2006 Census will be available in late May 2006.
