UMA Broadcasting launches Waatea News on Radio New Zealand
UMA Broadcasting initiative Waatea News in English will now provide bulletins for Radio New Zealand. The Waatea news service debuted on National Radio this morning Monday 23rd January 2006.
The contract previously held by Mana News, will see four Waatea News bulletins air daily on the News and Current affairs shows Morning Report and Checkpoint.
Although Waatea News has been broadcasting in Auckland on urban Maori radio station Waatea 603am since March 2005, UMA Broadcasting CEO Willie Jackson says it is a significant step that non-Maori will now have access to the service, Jackson also says “Producing Maori News in English complements what we do in Te Reo Maori (Waatea are the National Maori Language News contract providers) and it is very important that National Radio listeners are able to gain an insight into Te Ao Maori”.
