New Carparking Facilities at Christchurch Airport
Construction of Christchurch International Airport’s new 600 space, four-level carparking building is due to commence in
March. The $13 million building will be erected in a section of the existing public carpark.
Increasing demand on current parking due to an increase in passenger numbers, combined with forecast continued growth,
has necessitated the development of further carparking options to provide an improved level of service to the local
region. ‘This new facility will provide an additional 40% capacity’, said chief executive Rene Bakx, ‘and will benefit
airport users by providing convenient covered parking close to the airport terminal, and with large lifts for passengers
and baggage’.
The construction contract has been awarded to Naylor Love Construction Ltd. Calcon Ltd have been awarded the contract
for associated roading and alterations to the existing carparking facilities. ‘We’re pleased to again be working with
local Canterbury construction companies, along with Christchurch based Warren & Mahoney Architects and Hassell Architects from Sydney, on this state of the art, user-friendly facility’, says Mr Bakx.
Alan Reay Consultants and Beca are structural engineers for the project, with services engineering by Pedersen Read,
Beca and Cosgrove Major. Project Management is by Carson Group in association with ProDirections, and Rawlinsons are the
quantity surveyors.
Works are expected to take approximately eight months, with additional carparking space being made available during this
time to meet demand. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to airport users, and the airport company will be
providing detailed information to airport users to inform them of the changes.
