Sustainable transport project to plant 20,000 trees
The Sustainable Business Network has embarked on a four-year sustainable transport project to make Bay businesses more
transport-efficient and plant 20,000 trees in Tauranga, offsetting business vehicle emissions.
Titled project Green Fleet, the initiative will assist Western Bay businesses to become more transport efficient through
improved travel planning and better driving techniques. Businesses will be kept up to date with the latest clean and
efficient transport technologies and will have the opportunity to plant native trees to offset their vehicle fleet
emissions.
Regional manager for the Sustainable Business Network (SBN) Calum Revfem says the project represents an ideal
opportunity for businesses that have been struck by rising fuel prices and increasing traffic congestion to do something
about it. They also get to be carbon neutral by planting trees in a local planting project such as the Kopurererua
Valley.
Project Green Fleet kicks off in 2006 and SBN are now seeking businesses to participate. With support from Environment
Bay of Plenty's environmental enhancement fund, 17 businesses of different sizes will be able to take part in the first
year of the project at no cost.
