Workplace literacy and numeracy moves welcomed by Business NZ
Business NZ Chief Executive Phil O'Reilly today welcomed the Government's announcement that it would develop a
comprehensive strategy to improve literacy and numeracy skills in the workforce.
"The lack of these fundamental skills in a relatively high proportion of employees has long been a key concern for
employers. These skills are the foundation for all other forms of training and learning. Without them, there can be no
real progress," he said.
"Business NZ welcomes the Government focus on ensuring everyone in the workforce has an adequate level of literacy and
numeracy skills. This will be a difficult task, but will be central to lifting productivity, growth and ultimately
wages. It is imperative that the work is adequately resourced.
"It will be important for the Government to include and engage business in this work. Business NZ looks forward to
working with the Department of Labour and Tertiary Education Commission to ensure the voice of business is reflected in
the final strategy."
