Nationwide Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey 2/2005
The second round of the 2005 Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Surveys conducted by Research International was released today at noon.
The nationwide audience figures are based on the combination of the thirteen areas surveyed over a six week period during September and October this year.
Department of Statistics Census 2001 data indicates that there are approximately 2,462,500 people aged ten years and over in the thirteen main centres used for the Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey. Of these 2,462,500 people, 84.8% listen to a commercial radio station at some time during the week. On average, each person aged ten years and over listens to commercial radio for 19 hours and 22 minutes each week.
The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 16,832 people aged ten years and over has found that the network with the most listeners each week is now Newstalk ZB, with 432,700 different people tuning in each week. The Edge network moves to second placing with 420,200 listeners, followed by Classic Hits network maintaining third placing with 404,300 listeners. The Rock Network moves up to fourth placing this survey round with 348,100 different listeners each week, followed by the More FM network with 345,000 different listeners each week. Newcomer networks Radio Live and Viva enter the commercial radio survey with 116,300 and 88,200 listeners respectively.
The network with the highest share of commercial radio listening in New Zealand continues to be the Newstalk ZB network with a 13.6% share of the commercial radio listening. The second placed network remains Classic Hits with a 10.1% share of commercial radio listening, followed by The Rock network with a 9.3% share. The Edge network holds onto fourth placing with a 7.7% share. The increased market coverage of the More FM network now shows a fifth place ranking with 6.8% share of the nation-wide commercial radio listening. Radio Live shows a national share of 2.3% and Viva a result of 1.9% in their first survey.
Breakfast results show the Newstalk ZB network continuing to hold the highest national share, with 17.3% of the commercial radio breakfast market, followed by the Classic Hits network with a 10.5% share. The More FM network takes third place with an 8.8% share, followed closely by The Rock network with an 8.3% share at breakfast. Fifth position is held by The Edge network with a 7.7% share of the nationwide commercial radio breakfast market.

Auckland Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey T2/2005
The second round of the Auckland 2005 Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Surveys conducted by Research International was released today at noon.
Department of Statistics 2001 Census data indicates that there are approximately 908,400 people aged over 10 years in the Auckland survey area used for the Radio Audience Measurement Survey. Of these 910,100 people, 84.3% listen to a commercial radio station at some time during the week.
The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 3042 people aged 10 years and over has found that Newstalk ZB continues to have the most listeners each week, with 202,200 different people tuning in each week. Mai FM88.6 retains second place with 147,900 different listeners each week, followed by Classic Hits 97.4FM moving up to third placing with 126,300 listeners. Today’s Hit Music ZM91.0 moves to fourth position with 101,000 listeners and The Edge gains the fifth position with 100,200 listeners. Stations launched since the last survey are Viva 98.2FM and Radio Live which achieved 73,800 and 43,900 listeners respectively.
The commercial radio station with the highest market share in Auckland remains Newstalk ZB with a 15.9% share of the market. Classic Hits 97.4FM remains in second placing with a 9.0% share of commercial radio listening in Auckland, followed by Mai FM88.6 which moves up into third place with a 7.5% share. Coast moves to fourth placing in the market this round with a 6.7% share. The Rock takes fifth placing this round with a 5.3% share. Viva 98.2FM enters the market with a 4.8% share, and Radio Live with a 2.1% share.
Breakfast (Mon-Fri 6am-9am) results show Newstalk ZB continuing to hold the highest share, with 21.6% of the commercial radio breakfast market, followed by Classic Hits 97.4FM with an 8.9% share. Mai FM 88.6 moves up to third place this round with a 6.2% share of the breakfast market. The Rock recorded a 5.3% share for fourth place. Today’s Hit Music ZM91.0 moves to fifth place with a 5.0% share this survey round.

Christchurch Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey T2/2005
The second round of the Christchurch 2005 Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Surveys conducted by Research International was released today at noon.
Department of Statistics Census 2001 data indicates that there are approximately 330,100 people aged over 10 years in the Christchurch survey area used for the Radio Audience Measurement Survey. Of these 330,100 people, 86.9% listen to a commercial radio station at some time during the week.
The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 1,523 people aged 10 years and over has found that 89.0 The Edge continues to have the most listeners each week, with 75,800 different people tuning in each week. 92MoreFM retains second place with 64,500 different listeners each week, followed by Newstalk ZB at third placing with 62,800 listeners. The Rock 93.7FM holds onto fourth placing this round with 62,200 listeners and The Breeze maintains fifth place with 52,300 listeners each week. Newcomer Radio Live shows 15,700 different listeners each week.
The commercial radio station with the highest market share in Christchurch continues to be Newstalk ZB with a 16.4% share of the market, followed by The Rock 93.7FM maintaining second placing with a 13.1% share of commercial radio listening in Christchurch. The Edge moves up to third place with a 9.5% share, and fourth placing station is 92 More FM with a 9.3% share. Solid Gold takes fifth place with an 8.9% share of the market. Radio Live reached a market share of 2.8% for its first survey.

Dunedin Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey T2/2005
The second round of the Dunedin 2005 Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Surveys conducted by Research International was released today at noon.

The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 1,049 people aged 10 years and over has found that Classic Hits 89.4FM now has the most listeners each week, with 21,500 different people tuning in. The Rock retains second placing with 20,500 different listeners each week, followed by The Edge moving to third place with 19,200 listeners. More FM and Newstalk ZB share fourth equal placing this round with 14,100 listeners and Radio Dunedin moves up to fifth placing with 12,900 different listeners each week. Newcomer Radio Live enters the market with 4,700 different listeners each week.
The commercial radio station with the highest market share in Dunedin continues to be Radio Dunedin with a 16.3% share of the market. The Rock retains second placing, with a 12.6% share of commercial radio listening in Dunedin, followed by Newstalk ZB moving up to third placing with an 11.8% share. Classic Hits 89.4FM moves to fourth position with a 10.7% share followed by The Edge maintaining fifth placing in the market with a 9.5% share of commercial radio listening in Dunedin. Radio Live shows a market share of 2.0% in its first survey.
Breakfast results show Radio Dunedin once again taking the highest share with 16.1% of the commercial radio breakfast market. Newstalk ZB retains second placing at breakfast with a 15.0% share. Classic Hits 89.4FM moves up to third placing this round with a 12.5% share of the breakfast market, followed by The Rock moving to fourth placing at breakfast with a 10.8% share of the commercial radio breakfast market. More FM retains fifth placing at breakfast this round with a 10.2% share.

The Hawkes Bay 2005 Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Surveys conducted by Research International was released today at 12pm.
Department of Statistics Census Data indicates that there are approximately 102,500 people aged over 10 years in the Hawkes Bay survey area used for the Radio Audience Measurement Survey. Of these 102,500 people, 87.5% of them listen to a commercial radio station at some time during the week.
The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 1142 people aged 10 years and over has found that The Edge continues to have the most listeners each week, with 23,400 different people tuning in each week. Classic Hits 89.5FM retains second place with 21,800 different listeners each week, followed by The Rock maintaining third place with 21,400 listeners. Radio Hauraki moves up to fourth place with 16,200 listeners, and Newstalk ZB moves to fifth place with 13,800 different listeners each per week. Radio Live enters the market with 7,300 different listeners each week.

The Manawatu 2005 Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Surveys conducted by Research International was released today at noon.
Department of Statistics Census Data indicates that there are approximately 94,900 people aged over 10 years in the Manawatu survey area used for the Radio Audience Measurement Survey. Of these 94,900 people, 84.9% of them listen to a commercial radio station at some time during the week.
The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 1029 people aged 10 years and over has found that More FM has the most listeners, with 25,000 different people tuning in each week. The Edge retains second place with 22,800 different listeners each week, followed by The Rock who move up to third place with 17,900 listeners. Classic Hits 97.8ZAFM moves to fourth place this round with 15,900 listeners and Solid Gold retains fifth place with 13,700 different listeners each week. Newcomers Radio Live and Coast show 8,700 and 5,700 listeners respectively.
The commercial radio station with the highest market share in the Manawatu is More FM with a 14.8% share of the market. The Rock moves up to second place with a 13.7% share of commercial radio listening in Manawatu, followed by Classic Hits 97.8ZAFM with a 10.2% share. Newstalk ZB moves up to fourth place this round with a 9.4% share and The Edge moves to fifth in the market with a 9.1% share of commercial radio listening in the Manawatu. Coast shows 4.3% and Radio Live a 4.1% market share result in their first survey in the Manawatu.
Breakfast results show More FM holding the highest share, with a 16.5% of the Manawatu commercial radio breakfast market. Newstalk ZB moves up to second placing at breakfast with an 11.0% share, closely followed by The Rock with a 10.7% share. The Edge and The Breeze also follow closely this round with a 9.5% and 9.4% share respectively of the Manawatu commercial radio breakfast market.

The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 1270 people aged 10 years and over has found that The Edge now has the most listeners each week, with 15,300 different people tuning in. Classic Hits 98.8ZAFM moves to second placing this round with 15,000 people tuning in each week. More FM moves into third place with 13,200 different listeners each week, followed by Radio Hauraki with 11,500 listeners and Hokonui Gold with 11,300 listeners. New to the market, Radio Live enters with 4,300 in its first survey.
The commercial radio station with the highest market share in Southland remains Classic Hits 98.8ZAFM with a 13.4% share of the market. The second placed station continues to be Radio Hauraki with an 11.7% share of commercial radio listening in Southland, followed by The Edge with a 10.7% share. Hokonui Gold follows closely at fourth placing with a 10.0% share of commercial radio listening in Southland, with fifth place taken by More FM with a 9.8% share. Radio Live achieved a 3.9% share of commercial radio listening.
Breakfast results show Classic Hits 98.8ZAFM continuing to hold the highest share, with 18.0% of the commercial radio breakfast market. More FM takes second place at breakfast with an 11.4% share. Department of Statistics Census 2001 data indicates that there are approximately 186,300 people aged over 10 years in the Waikato survey area used for the Radio Audience Measurement Survey. Of these 186,300 people, 85.1% listen to a commercial radio station at some time during the week.
The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 1,265 people aged 10 years and over has found that 97.8 The Edge continues to have the most listeners each week, with 44,800 different people tuning in each week. The Rock moves up to second placing with 38,600 different listeners each week, followed by Classic Hits 98.6ZHFM in third placing with 38,000 listeners. ZM89.8 retains fourth placing this survey round with 34,500 listeners and Radio Hauraki stays in fifth place with 23,100 different listeners each week. Newcomer Radio Live registered 4,700 listeners each week.

The second placed station is Classic Hits 98.6ZHFM with a 13.2% share of commercial radio listening in Waikato, followed by The Edge with an 11.0% share. Radio Hauraki retains fourth place with a 9.6% share, closely followed by ZM89.8 at fifth in the market with a 9.3% share of commercial radio listening in Waikato. Radio Live achieved a 1.0% share of the Waikato market in its first survey.
Breakfast results show Classic Hits 98.6ZAFM continuing to hold the highest share, with 14.8% of the commercial radio breakfast market. The Rock moves up to second placing with a 14.0% share, followed by The Edge with a 12.3% share of the breakfast market. ZM89.8 retains fourth place at breakfast with a 10.0% share and Newstalk ZB moves up to fifth position with an 8.8% share of the commercial radio breakfast market.
The margin of error on these results is  2.8%

Wellington Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey T2/2005
The second round of the Wellington 2005 Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Surveys conducted by Research International was released today at noon.
Department of Statistics 2001 Census Data indicates that there are approximately 290,100 people aged over 10 years in the Wellington survey area used for the Radio Audience Measurement Survey. Of these 290,100 people, 80.6% listened to a commercial radio station at some time during the week.
The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 1,544 people aged 10 years and over has found that Today’s Hit Music ZM90.3 & 93.5 continues to have the most listeners each week, with 64,000 different people tuning in each week. The Breeze remains in second place with 58,100 different listeners each week, followed by More FM moving up to third place with 43,900 listeners. Classic Hits 90FM and Newstalk ZB gain fourth-equal placing with 42,900 listeners each, followed by The Edge in fifth placing this round with 32,100 listeners each week.
The commercial radio station with the highest market share in Wellington this round is now The Breeze with a 16.3% share of the market. Today’s Hit Music ZM90.3 & 95.3 moves to second place with a 14.3% share of commercial radio listening in Wellington, followed by Newstalk ZB with a 14.0% share. Fourth placing is shared equally by The Rock and classic Hits 90FM with a 6.7% share each. More FM moves into fifth place with a 6.3% share of commercial radio listening in Wellington.
Breakfast results show no change in the rankings with Today's Hit Music ZM 90.9 & 93.5 continuing to hold the highest share, with 18.8% of the commercial radio breakfast market. Newstalk ZB at second place has a 16.1% share followed by The Breeze with 14.6%. More FM maintains fourth place at breakfast with an 8.6% share, and The Rock 96.3FM in fifth position with a 6.3% share of commercial radio listening in Wellington during breakfast.
The margin of error on these results is  2.5%
