Building Consents Steady
Consent numbers for new dwellings have shown little change in recent months, Statistics New Zealand said today. Consents
were issued for 2,279 new dwelling units in September 2005, 22 fewer than in August 2005. There were 273 new apartment
units authorised in September 2005, 2 fewer than in August 2005.
The value of consents issued for residential buildings in September 2005 is $611 million.
Residential buildings accounted for 63 percent of all building consent values for the September 2005 year, compared with
67 percent for the previous September year.
For non-residential buildings, the trend for the value of issued consents continues at a relatively high level compared
with earlier years. The unadjusted value for September 2005 is $367 million.
The largest contributor in September 2005 was shops, restaurants and taverns, with a value of $86 million.
For the year ended September 2005, the value of consents for all buildings totalled $10,903 million, up $563 million
from the previous September year.
Figures for recent months may have been affected by some councils reducing the backlog of consents which followed
changes to the building consents and inspection process that came into force on 31 March 2005.
