Call for smart saving tips brings out the weird and the wacky
Auckland, 25 October: The Warehouse hunt for New Zealand’s Bargain Champion has turned up thousands of smart and savvy
ways that Kiwis get the best out of life by making the most of their money – and then there were some bargain tips that
left the judges simply scratching their heads.
More than 15,000 bargain tips were received as part of the nationwide competition, with five particularly savvy entrants
chosen to go through to the National Final this weekend to compete for a one-year $50,000 spending spree at The
Warehouse. While many New Zealanders came up with great ideas for living and shopping smart, there were a number of
entries that can only be described as wacky!
Spokesperson Cynthia Church says it was great to see the Kiwi sense of humour shine through. “For instance, one
memorable entry exploded the myth that showering together saves water. He described conducting a ‘test’ and concluded
that contrary to popular belief showering with his partner ended up taking much longer than if he was alone!”
Some of the more unusual Bargain Champion tips included:
“I use my sixth sense to guide me to the store with the best bargains.”
“Cut your own hair. It’s cheaper and your appearance cuts down on social obligations.”
“Treat pimples with fresh garlic juice”
“Stay single and live with Mum – it’s cheaper.”
“Make sure you keep your husband’s credit card away from him!”
“When walking through a store, keep your hands in your pockets at all times.”
“Avoid women!”
“Do not give money to your wife. Do not give money to your wife. Do not give money to your wife. Get the hint!”
“Spend your husband’s money, and save yours.”
“Place boil-in-the-bag food in the dishwasher when washing a load of dishes – heat and eat!”
“Use edible garden weeds in salads”
“Wash the dog in the shower with you.”
“Go to the store with no money.”
“If your microwave is broken – turn it into a letterbox”
“Don’t marry a ‘skinflint’ – you’ll be miserable. Instead marry a rich old man.”
“Live in a tent.”
The National Final event takes place at The Warehouse in Albany this Saturday. The official Bargain Champion judging
panel is Mary Lambie, former host of ‘Good Morning’ and ‘Money Doctor’; Sophie Gray, the Destitute Gourmet; Stephen
Tindall, founder of The Warehouse and the ultimate bargain hunter; and Raewyn Fox, Executive Officer of the New Zealand
Federation of Family Budgeting Services.
