Maori Television Screens Te Arawa Maori Sports Awards
Top Maori athletes from the Bay of Plenty tribe of Te Arawa are honoured in a special MAORI REGIONAL SPORTS AWARDS 2005
broadcast on Maori Television (Saturday October 29 at 8.00 PM).
Presented by Scotty Morrison, Stacey Daniels and Maori Television’s own Tumehe Rongonui, the annual event was hosted
earlier this month by Te Papa Takaro o Te Arawa in Rotorua to celebrate and promote the success of Maori sportspeople in
the pursuit of excellence.
Te Papa Takaro o Te Arawa kaiwhakahaere (organiser) Iwi Te Whau says past winners have included rugby star Caleb Ralph,
jockey Michael Walker and waka ama stalwart Corrina Gage. Categories include junior and senior sportsman and sportswoman
as well as coach and team of the year.
“These awards enable us to collectively honour and highlight the positive contribution of Te Arawa Maori athletes whose
efforts and accomplishments inspire and motivate us to challenge ourselves and be the best that we can be,” Iwi Te Whau
says.
“Together we have a unique opportunity to promote their achievements to our whanau, hapu and iwi throughout Aotearoa.”
Maori Television will screen a total of five regional awards events – Te Arawa (Saturday October 29 at 8.00 PM); Te Tai
Tokerau (Saturday November 5 at 8.00 PM); Turanganui-a-Kiwa (Saturday November 12 at 8.00 PM); Mataatua (Saturday
November 19 at 8.00 PM); and Kahungunu (Saturday November 26, at 8.00 PM).
The home of Maori sport, Maori Television is also the host broadcaster of the NATIONAL MAORI SPORTS AWARDS 2005 on
Sunday December 18 at 6.00 PM.
