Renowned paralympian and mountaineer, Mark Inglis, has launched PeakFuel, his own range of sports energy foods.
As well as being an internationally recognised cyclist, skier and climber, Mark is also one of New Zealand’s most respected winemakers. He has combined his passion for creating flavours and his passion for sport to create PeakFuel, currently a range of four energy gels; Xpresso Rush, Berry Burst, Choc Boost and Lime Lift. Two powdered energy drinks are also available, in Berry Burst and Lime Lift.
“After competing, climbing and training with high performance and multisports athletes for many years I wanted to create a product that tastes great, boosts performance and is easy to use,” says Inglis. “As a winemaker I am constantly blending and honing subtle flavours to create a finished product that is unique and satisfying to the palate. I decided that that great taste needed to apply to performance foods.”
The PeakFuel gels are a blend of minerals, sugars, and a touch of caffeine. Long chain sugars provide energy that will last up to 2 hours for a whole tube, this is blended with some short chain sugars for an immediate burst and just enough caffeine to increase the effectiveness of the gel.
“The products are designed to do the job of maximising your performance during and after intense exercise,” says Inglis. “The gel is packaged in an easy-to-dispense tube, like a small toothpaste tube. This means that athletes can pull it in and out of a bag or pocket, without getting a sticky mess everywhere. It is also easy to hold on to when you are running - the tube means you don’t get messy goo all over your hands.
“The re-sealable cap also allows you to put the tube away and carry on using it another time. Snatching small amounts at a time also ensures an even delivery of energy.”
The PeakFuel Hydration formula has been designed to taste great and to be used while exercising. The formula comes in 500g containers and is available in lemon/lime and an awesome berry flavour.
A modest 5.3% carbohydrate, of which just under half is long chain maltodextrin and the rest simple sugar, gives a balanced sugar structure which is not too sweet. High levels of biologically available Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and, importantly, Magnesium, all help delay the onset of cramp.
“The body needs to be using 600 to 800ml of fluid with useful salts for every hour of active exercise, but to be effective it needs 5-6% carbohydrate as salt uptake is an ‘active’ process that needs those sugars. A lot of drinks are too sweet to take at full strength. If they are diluted down, then those essential salts are dilute down too, not with PeakFuel!
“A wide range of athletes and sports people will benefit from PeakFuel, from individuals like cyclists, mountain bikers, runners, tri-athletes and multisports endurance racers to team sports like rugby, netball and hockey. We even have customers using the product for pig hunting trips! Basically, if you are exercising for over 40 minutes, PeakFuel will help you last the distance.”
The PeakFuel suite of products is designed to help individuals reach their true physical potential. Each PeakFuel product has been formulated by studying the science, balancing the flavour and texture in the lab, and then testing it in the most extreme situations (like cycling at the Sydney Paralympics, and climbing some of the World’s highest mountains – Cho Oyu at 8201m).
PeakFuel has given Mark a leg up when he’s really needed it most. The product is now available at all good cycle and outdoor stores nationwide.
