ADNZ/Origin 2005 National Design Awards
First time entrant Paul Stanley-Joblin, of Christchurch, claimed the coveted Supreme Award at the ADNZ/Origin 2005
National Design Awards announced in Queenstown last night (October 14).
The architectural designer won the prestigious title for his work on a new house in Deans Avenue opposite Hagley Park in
Christchurch, which also netted him the New Single Residential Dwelling and First Time Entrant awards. Stanley-Joblin
received a highly commended in the Commercial Interiors section for Coffee Culture at Westfield Mall in Riccarton.
The national awards were judged by: Michael Wyatt (architect); John Russ (national sales manager, James Hardie New
Zealand); Gill Ward (Carter Holt Harvey Wood Products); Liz Trainor (Resene Paints); and Rob Campion (Architectural
Profiles).
The judges congratulated Stanley-Joblin on his skills, describing the Christchurch property as a landmark, high impact
building.
“This house demonstrates a high quality of design and an excellent use of the site, which takes full advantage of the
outlook and corner position. The view of the park can be enjoyed from all rooms.”
Judges said Stanley-Joblin showed remarkable maturity for a first time entrant.
Another Christchurch architectural designer, Marcus Stufkens, of Loxodonta Design, won the Residential Multi-Unit
Dwelling Award for his work on the Bridgeport Apartments in Tauranga.
“These apartments were thoroughly thought-out architecturally, without resorting to repetition and we liked the subtle
use of colour and shape,” the judges said.
Stufkens showed his versatility, picking up the Bathroom and Resene Colour awards for the Fakir House in Christchurch.
“This work showed a wonderful mix of ancient and modern. It blended well with the marine environment and made great
statements with colour on the architectural features.”
The judges applauded the bathroom design, where Stufkens created a look of opulence and serenity despite the space
limitations.
Another house in Tauranga also earned Stufkens a Highly Commended in the Resense Colour Award.
Graham Sawell, of Pyramidz Architecture in Warkworth, received the Residential Alterations and Additions Award for the
Newman-Sinclair House in Rotorua with judges describing the extension as interesting and generous.
Tushka Glintmeyer, of Space Architecture in Wellington, was named Residential Interiors winner for a home on the Mana
Esplanade which used hard-edging materials, and an aggressive texture balanced by soft lighting.
Hamilton’s Noel Jessop claimed the Kitchen Award for the Mark Residence in the same city, which judges applauded as
having innovation beyond its years.
Meanwhile, in the commercial category, Neil Keiser of Cambridge, claimed top honours for a warehouse in Airport Rd,
Tamahere.
Judges said Keiser made good use of a difficult site.
“A bold, simple idea was carried through in the detail with a very light touch. It gives the right signals for a
fashion-conscious client.”
Keiser was also Highly Commended in the same category for a Cambridge café.
Peter Wynyard, of Christchurch, won the Commercial Interiors Award for his fit-out for the Unlimited School in the city.
“Not a traditional school by any means. The design is taken to a whole new level, suitable for intensive study.”
