The Ultimate engine clean up
Pictures speak louder than words. And BP’s latest fuel trial results show BP Ultimate keeps engines virtually as clean as when new, while use of premium fuel without cleaning additives can quickly lead to deposits forming on critical engine components.
To prove the engine cleaning benefits of BP Ultimate, BP took a 1998 V6 VT Holden Commodore and fitted a second fuel tank. One half of the engine was fuelled with BP Ultimate and the other half by a competitor’s premium 96 octane petrol which contains no additive.
Most New Zealand fuels contain some level of additive. BP Ultimate contains four times the level of cleaning additive found in most regular and premium fuels and uses a unique additive formula.
This trial is the latest in a comprehensive suite of fuel trials carried out by BP. Believed to be the biggest New Zealand-based fuel trial in decades, the results can be viewed at
Before the dual fuel trial, all the valves from the V6 engine were machine buffed to a brand new finish. After 10,000 kilometers of standard road driving the engine was dismantled and the valves photographed.
After 10,000 kilometers, the attached photographs show the valves from the cylinders fuelled by BP Ultimate are virtually as clean as when new, while the remaining valves show the formation of deposits.
Previous tests have shown BP Ultimate can remove up to 61 per cent of an engine’s existing intake system deposits, caused through the use of standard petrol.
BP New Zealand Managing Director, Peter Griffiths, said he was pleased but not surprised with the latest trial results.
“BP Ultimate is the best fuel we have ever offered in New Zealand. With 98 octane and four times the cleaning additive of typical petrol, it offers increased power and, as these trials show, a cleaner engine.
“During a period of increased global fuel prices it is important to continue to clearly demonstrate the benefits of this product, and these trials do that,” said Mr Griffiths.
“For many people their vehicle is one of their biggest investments. What this trial shows is that BP Ultimate can protect this investment. A dirty engine can lead to reduced performance and, over time, damage to the engine.
“A clean engine is one which can perform at optimum efficiency. For people who want to get the very best out of their car, the benefits of BP Ultimate are now crystal clear.”
Mr Griffiths said with the New Zealand Refining Company now beginning to replace 96 octane premium petrol with 95 octane, BP Ultimate was a valuable option for motorists who either wanted or required a higher octane fuel.
The dual fuel test vehicle has now been reassembled and will be conducting further fuel trials over the coming months.
BP Ultimate is a wholly imported fuel which has been in New Zealand since 2002. In May this year a new formulation of BP Ultimate arrived in New Zealand and has been rolled out to 104 BP service stations across the North and South Islands.
BP Ultimate is the only 98 octane fuel in the South Island. BP Ultimate is available at 104 service stations in select locations.
