Much needed recognition coming for Nation's Payroll people
Local payroll specialists Comacc are urging companies to nominate their payroll person for the prestigious title of Payclerk of the Year.
Payroll people are the lifeblood of the New Zealand economy - imagine the chaos if they went on strike! Yet few are ever recognised for the work they do, until the day the gremlins sabotage the system and even the hardiest team player is muttering - "Why hasn't my pay gone in..?"
September 2nd is National Payclerk's Day.
Collectively the nation's payroll people handle more than $50.00 billion and pay a workforce of over 1.2 million New Zealand workers. The $13 billion plus PAYE they collect on behalf of the Government funds public roading, hospitals and other public amenities, and is the foundation of a bristling enthusiastic economy.
Payroll people juggle more than 27 individual pieces of legislation governing their work, together with complicated company policies and eccentric time sheet systems, and most of us only notice their work when there's a problem.
National Payclerk Day, supported by Comacc ('The Payroll People') is a long-standing tradition in Australia and the United States, and is in its eighth year in New Zealand. National Payclerk Day gives the public a vehicle with which to appreciate and celebrate the challenges and hard work of their payroll person.
"The announcement of National Payclerk of the Year on September 2nd - National Payclerk Day - is our chance to honour and respect the excellent job payroll people carry out, day in day out, 52 weeks of the year," says Steve Nathan, Managing Director of Comacc. "It's a chance to say 'thanks'.
"Companies could demonstrate their recognition of the difficult job their payroll person does by giving them a day off on National Payclerk Day. Or they could send her [for at least 70% of payroll managers are women], a bunch of flowers to demonstrate genuine appreciation for the magnificent job they do" says Nathan.
Comacc invites employers and organisations nationwide to submit a nomination for their treasured payroll person for the coveted title of National Payclerk of the year. Nominate your payroll person online at www.comacc.co.nz or send an email to payclerk@comacc.co.nz to request a hardcopy nomination form before Thursday.
Winners of the National Payclerk of the Year 2005 will be announced on Friday 2nd September - National Payclerk Day.
