The Fight Against Drink Spikers
The general public now have something they can use in an effort to prevent their drinks from being spiked with GHB and
Ketamine in New Zealand.
The New Zealand Drug Detection Agency Limited (NZDDA) has just released the Drink Spike Detector kit, it is available in
two forms, a personal protection kit (6 tests per kit) or a bar coaster.
1. The Drink Spike kits work in three ways
2. They detect levels of GHB and Ketamine that would incapacitate someone if slipped into a drink, NZDDA warns there are
however a number of other drugs on the market that may be used to drug someone, alcohol being the most prevalent.
3. It raises the awareness of the issue of drink spiking and drug facilitated crime.
4. It can deter would be spikers from tampering with drinks because of the increased possibility of being caught.
The bar coaster is targeted at business/licensed premises wanting to take a pro-active stance against drink spiking. By
using the coasters in their bars it will raise the awareness of this growing social problem, this will help deter
potential offenders by sending a clear message to them, that they are taking radical measures to combat these types of
offences.

NZDDA hope that licensed premises and major breweries will follow Australia’s example in an effort to help deter would
be drink spikers.
Kirk Hardy - company director of NZDDA, explains that there is a need to recognise these types of sexual crimes as a
major problem in which the New Zealand public can play a part in solving.
The kits are not the absolute solution to this problem, but we are duty bound and must make everyone aware of measures
they can take to guard against such offences. We must enable people to make an informed choice.
