Latest Education announcements a step in the right direction
The Minister of Education announced the results of a funding review and a structural review today.
“Increasing the relevance of tertiary education to jobs, improving workplace literacy and getting the Ministry of Education, NZQA and the Tertiary Education Commission to work more closely together are all useful outcomes”, said Darel Hall Executive Director of the Industry Training Federation.
“We know there are skill and labour shortages in most industries. Action to reduce skill shortages is helpful.
“We also know that contextualised literacy and numeracy in the workplace is a good investment for the learner, the productivity of the workplace and benefits learners’ families and the wider community.
“The tertiary education bureaucracy should focus on clear role definition between the organisations concerned and service to its stakeholders so it can work more effectively together. The changes announced are therefore welcome.
“We do need to make sure that the benefit of industry-relevant short awards continues to be recognized.
“The ITF will work with sector colleagues to make sure the detail of the changes matches the direction indicated by the announcements”, said Darel Hall.
