Press Release 7 July, 2005 BioGro New Zealand
For immediate release
BioGro Certified Organic
is good for your health, the environment and social justice .
Fair environment and fair practice.
BioGro is proud of its standards that not only include positive environmental management but also incorporate the social
justice aspects which underlie the principles of fair trade.
BioGro (The Biological Producers and Consumers Council of NZ) has long considered employment issues as part of its
standards and further improved that component of its standards in January, and is keen that consumers realise that the
BioGro standard incorporates a holistic approach to people and production.
This September in Adelaide the 15th International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM) Organic World
Congress will be held.
IFOAM, the principle international organic body, has a new publication: Recommendations for Inspection of Social
Standards, the base for international discussions to strengthen even further the social justice component of
international organic standards.
BioGro enjoys its status as the premium certifier in New Zealand of organic production and will be participating in the
discussions in Adelaide to encourage improvement in human rights in food production throughout the world.
BioGro recognises that the Fair Trade organisation is helping many people in developing countries. BioGro supports this
initiative and records that IFOAM accredited organic certifiers such as BioGro not only certify that employers are
meeting human rights requirements but are also certifying environmental production systems, a win win environmental and
social high score.
Taking part in the congress and the incorporated International Scientific Conference on Organic Agriculture and the 8th
International IFOAM Organic Viticulture and Wine Conference will be several BioGro Council and Board members.
