Ford dealership embraces Sat Nav
South Auckland Motors in Manukau City is the first Auckland-based Ford dealership to install integrated satellite
navigation in one of its demonstration vehicles.
The optional VDO Dayton integrated sat nav system uses the Ford Territory’s original-equipment colour display, which is
ergonomically placed high in the vehicle’s centre console.
The progressive dealership has fitted a VDO Dayton in-car sat nav unit to one of its popular Ford Territory lifestyle
crossover vehicles.
Unlike some cheaper portable personal sat nav units, the VDO Dayton guidance system – which is offered as an aftermarket
accessory by the Ford dealership – uses information from satellites, an onboard gyroscope and vehicle speed sensor, and
is totally integrated.
The gyro and speed sensor enable the sat nav system to provide the driver with directions even when a satellite signal
as lost, such as when travelling through a tunnel or in the central city.
It uses the Territory’s standard colour display unit to for that original-equipment look and provides visual direction
in the form of maps and symbols, which combine with audible instructions to guide the driver to his or her destination.
The Sat Nav control unit is located above the Territory’s factory-fitted computer, under the front passenger seat.
GeoSmart, New Zealand’s premier map supplier, provides the sat nav system’s mapping on a CD-ROM.
All of New Zealand’s motorways, and city, suburban and rural roads have been mapped, and coverage extends over 94,000
kilometres of roads and 3500 towns
Sat nav also provides the driver with more than 27,000 points of interest, such as airports, banks, petrol stations and
car parks. There's even a 'home' button that will direct the drive home, turn by turn, from anywhere in New Zealand.
South Auckland Motors can offer fully-integrated VDO Dayton satellite navigation as an aftermarket accessory on any Ford
vehicle that uses a colour display screen, such as Falcon models fitted with Premium Sound.
Alternative VDO options, which boast all of the above features but have a flip-out screen or an additional colour
monitor, allows sat nav to be fitted to other vehicles in the Ford line-up including Ford Explorer.
