Census Campaign to Reach All New Zealanders
Statistics New Zealand is developing a major public information campaign, to ensure all New Zealanders participate in the 2006 Census, Government Statistician Brian Pink said today. “We need to maximise New Zealanders involvement in our census to ensure our official statistics are as relevant and usable as possible. While Census Day is 7 March 2006, we need to start now to ensure the importance of the census is understood in all our communities,” Brian Pink said.
Brian Pink also stated, “This campaign needs to involve help and information services such as an 0800 helpline, a website, community liaison programmes and a programme for schools, as well as advertising.” Advertising agency FCB has been selected as the preferred supplier, through a competitive and open tendering process, to partner Statistics New Zealand in developing the advertising part of the public information campaign. This advertising campaign will have a budget of around $2 million, and will commence in early 2006.
“Statistics New Zealand greatly appreciates the goodwill and cooperation of the public in providing information. Our public information campaign is one of the ways we seek to make taking part in the 2006 Census as user-friendly as possible for everyone,” said Brian Pink.
Census information is a fundamental building block of the Official Statistics System. Census statistics are used by government, business, local councils and community groups to plan business location, and services in areas such as education, housing, health, roading and public transport.
