Environmental Award For Taranaki Combined Cycle Power Station
Contact Energy’s Taranaki Combined Cycle power station has won a Taranaki Regional Council Award for environmental management, performance and innovation.
The award scheme recognises outstanding projects that put into practice the sustainable management philosophy of the Resource Management Act 1991.
Taranaki Combined Cycle power station was chosen for the award for taking a proactive approach to environmental management and consistently achieving a high level of environmental performance throughout its six years of operation. The station is accredited to the internationally recognised ISO 14001 environmental performance management system.
Generation Manager Thermal Barrie Almond said the company was very pleased to receive the accolade.
“We are delighted to receive the award from the Taranaki Regional Council. Contact is committed to environmental excellence and this is a great result for the effort our team has put in to achieve the very best in environmental performance.“
The power station, located east of Stratford, was the first of the new generation of modern thermal stations in New Zealand when it was completed in 1998. It has been owned by Contact Energy since March 2003.
“Taranaki Combined Cycle power station uses advanced generation technology that combines both gas and steam turbines to create huge efficiencies in electricity generation. It uses less fuel and produces fewer emissions per unit of electricity generated than older thermal stations,” said Mr Almond.
In Taranaki, Contact Energy operates the Taranaki Combined Cycle at Stratford and the New Plymouth power station.
All Contact’s ten generation plants are accredited to the ISO 14001 environmental performance management system certification.
