NZPA sells newswire to Radio Live
The New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) is to supply its national news wire to CanWest RadioWorks. This is the first
contract NZPA has secured outside the supply of news to its traditional daily/Sunday newspaper market since it announced
major changes to its operations earlier this year.
CanWest Chief Executive Brent Impey said the addition of the NZPA national newswire later this month would add strength
and depth to Radio Live’s news-gathering capabilities.
“We appreciate that NZPA is still developing its capabilities to supply news in different formats than its traditional
market but we feel there is definite value in being able to tap into NZPA’s very strong coverage of national news
including Parliament, sport and finance,” said Mr Impey
NZPA Chief Executive Lincoln Gould said NZPA was looking to become the principal supplier of news to media in New
Zealand whether it be print, radio, television or Internet-based news services.
“We have one of the most highly experienced and capable news teams in the country and the deal with RadioWorks is just
the first step toward being able to provide the quality output of our journalists to the full range of news channels in
New Zealand,’’ Mr Gould said.
NZPA was founded 125 years ago this year as a co-operative agency through which daily and Sunday newspapers shared
their copy. Over the past 10 years the agency has developed its own news gathering capabilities and the decision was
taken earlier this year to stop sharing copy and to allow NZPA to supply news to any media on a non-exclusive basis.
