Duty Free Stores New Zealand Expands Into South Australia
Duty Free Stores New Zealand has taken a significant step up in the Australian market by winning the right to begin trading from the new Adelaide Airport terminal due to open later this year.
Duty Free Stores New Zealand is a family-owned business based in Wellington with duty free stores at four airports around New Zealand, at Wellington, Hamilton, Dunedin and Queenstown.
Its Australian operation, Duty Free Stores Australia Pty Ltd, has one outlet already in Australia, at Queensland’s Gold Coast Airport.
The South Australian duty free concession is an eight-year contract which allows DFSNZ to start trading from three locations at Adelaide Airport’s new international terminal. The A$260m terminal is scheduled to be opened in October this year.
DFSNZ Managing Director Don Archibald says it’s an important step forward for a New Zealand family business.
“Adelaide provides a terrific opportunity for us to build a base in Australia. The contract will fit in well with our current operations at the Gold Coast which have gone from strength to strength since we opened there in 1999.”
“We feel we put together an innovative proposal for Adelaide and they felt we were the ones who were most likely to maximise duty free sales at Adelaide airport.”
Don Archibald says his family business takes enormous satisfaction that this decision is a terrific vote of confidence in its company and the marketing approach it take at each of the airports it operates within.
