Basic Fire Equipment Can Save Lives
Keeping basic fire equipment around the home could mean the difference between a small containable fire and total devastation. An addition to the trusty smoke alarm, fire extinguishers, fire blankets and hose reels will all help to minimize household fire damage.
Chris Mak, Wormald’s Technical Manager says that while smoke alarms are excellent devices, to ensure they work properly home owners need to install new batteries at regular intervals.
“It’s all very well to have a smoke alarm installed, but people need to make sure they keep them in good working order. It is also good to think about position – smoke alarms need to be in a place where they can be heard, especially during the night.”
When there is a need to douse a small fire in a hurry, a fire extinguisher is a safe bet. A portable fire extinguisher stationed at a handy place can be used with ease and refilled after use. But it is important to ensure that the correct type of extinguisher is used. Some types are for use on boats, caravans and cars and are best stationed in the garage area. Some are water based and not suitable for fires involving electrical equipment. Others are more general purpose, and can be used within the home.
A fire blanket is convenient to have around the home, especially for areas that are prone to fire break outs, such as the kitchen. Available in a range of sizes, fire blankets are made of fibreglass and are highly fire resistant. They are designed to smother flames as well as protect individuals from radiated heat.
“Home owners need to make sure they are prepared for a fire before it strikes. The effects of fire are devastating, but can be minimized if the right equipment is available at that crucial moment.”
