Skellerup Industries Limited (Skellerup) adds another premium brand to its architectural building products portfolio
Skellerup’s Industrial division has added Alucobond – New Zealand’s top selling aluminium composite cladding material – to its stable of premium architectural building products.
Skellerup, a wholly owned subsidiary of Skellmax Industries Limited, purchased the assets of Street Image Alucobond (SIA), a division of Architectural Composites Ltd, the exclusive New Zealand importer, fabricator and installer of Alucobond.
Announcing the purchase, effective 01 April 2005, Managing Director Donald Stewart noted the synergy between Alucobond and Skellerup’s current range of construction products.
“The acquisition continues Skellmax’s growth strategy outlined in the 2004 Annual Report of purchasing businesses that complement existing operations. Alucobond currently has 25% market share in New Zealand so there are significant opportunities to grow the business using our sales and marketing representation. Aluminium cladding complements our range of waterproofing cladding products and strengthens our sales offer to architects of specialist products for cladding of buildings.
“Our intention is to be the leading supplier of aluminium composite cladding in New Zealand in the next five years,” says Donald Stewart.
Alucobond is manufactured by Alcan, the second largest aluminium company in the world. Earlier this year Alcan was ranked as the ‘World’s Most Admired Company’ in the metals industry category and was one of the top companies in overall ranking by Fortune magazine’s global corporate reputation survey.
Alucobond is a light composite material consisting of two aluminium cover sheets and a core of polyethylene. It is a versatile product developed to provide a façade material for buildings, most notably in New Zealand it was used to clad Te Papa and more recently the new Christchurch Women’s Hospital. All three New Zealand International Airport upgrades have made extensive use of Alucobond to create architectural features and forms. Available in a selection of colours and a variety of sheet sizes and thicknesses, it can be bent, curved or shaped to any angle and offers a high level of resistance to weather and industrial pollution.
Chief Operating Officer, Mike McKessar says over the last 15 years SIA has developed a reputation as a highly professional organisation providing a comprehensive service from design through to installation.
“The owner of SIA, Barry Thwaites will remain involved in the business to provide us with knowledge and support gained from twenty years in the industry,” says Mike McKessar.
Skellerup will apply its experience in systems and processes to SIA, but will initially adopt a ‘business as usual’ strategy. The Alucobond business will operate from the same premises and maintain existing postal address and telephone numbers.
Other key construction products supplied by Skellerup’s Industrial Division include Butylclad and Epiclad (rubber waterproofing membrane), Dec-k-ing (PVC decking) and CertainTeed (Asphalt shingles).
