100 Year Old Leeston Landmark Goes Up For Auction
‘Character villa’ might be one of the most overworked phrases in real estate, but few properties have as much charm as a Canterbury villa that’s been a town focal point for 100 years. Built in 1905, the three-bedroom property in Leeston, 25km south of Christchurch, is a familiar landmark for locals, who remember it as the local GPs’ residence and surgery between the 1930s and 60s.
In classic villa style, the home is complemented by solid kauri and a latticework-trimmed verandah that extends right around to the back and a sunny deck space. Inside, the grand hallway is lined with magnificent polished rimu floors that continue throughout the home, with wood paneling walls running up to the 12-foot ceilings. But for all the home’s history, recent owners have updated it to incorporate all the modern conveniences and add a touch of contemporary elegance.
The recently refurbished kitchen and elaborate dining room beg to be admired by owners and visitors alike. The bathroom - the surgery’s old dispensary - includes a 4ft clawed bath and new shower, and insulation has been added throughout so its warm through winter.
The mature English style garden with apple trees, roses, foxgloves and native kowhai offers a delightful retreat for the senses. Property salesagent Aime Thompson of Harveys Southwest in Christchurch expects the home, with its unique history and superb renovations, to generate interest from discerning buyers wanting the very best of old and new design.
“Villas are the icon Kiwi home,” she says. “They evoke all kinds of memories for a lot of New Zealanders and have a distinctive old world charm. But it is rare that an example maintained and updated as well as this comes to market. “We look forward to marketing this superb landmark property.” 32 High St, Leeston, will go to auction on site on 7 May at 11am.
