New free bus service a boon for tourists and locals
A new free bus service commenced last week and is already benefiting tourists and locals alike by making accessible more parts of the Viaduct Basin and surrounds.
This week the Sanford Limited developed Auckland Fish Market launched its brightly coloured ‘Fish Market Free Bus’ service. The 19 seater bus travels on a 30 minute circuit from Auckland fish market between 0900 and 1630 daily. Although there are seven designated stops at central city hotels and tourist outlets, people may alight or leave the bus at any point on the route.
The service has quickly proven to be popular, with dozens of tourists utilising the service every day.
Tourism Auckland Chief Executive Officer Graeme Osborne says the bus is an innovative concept that will benefit tourists and locals by providing easy access to the Auckland Fish Market and surrounding areas.
“It helps to further open up Auckland’s waterfront area and provides ready access to the Auckland Fish Market, which is already becoming a visitor attraction.”
Auckland Fish Market Manager Nigel Thomas expects the bus, “which is an artwork in itself”, to become a popular feature in central Auckland and is already bringing more tourists and customers to the Market.
Sanford Limited Managing Director Eric Barratt noted that business at the Auckland Fish Market is increasing steadily as people appreciate the vibrant live and fresh seafood and other high quality food attractions at the retail and wholesale outlets. The early morning auction is increasing the availability and quality of seafood available in the Auckland region and the Seafood School classes are proving popular with a growing regular clientele as well as being an ideal team building corporate entertainment venue with a new and different appeal.
Eric Barratt noted that “Apart from being visually appealing, the free bus service is complementing central Auckland’s public transport network.”
Auckland Fish Market is the city’s only seven-day fresh food market selling ultra-fresh fish and other food products such as fruit and vegetables and delicatessen goods. Plenty of free parking is available at the market, which is located on the corner of Jellicoe and Daldy Streets (around the corner from Emirates Team New Zealand).
