NZAA Chief Executive, Brian Gibbons, said the shift from an annual Car of the Year Award to the AA Motoring Excellence Awards had exceeded all expectations. "Where, last year we had 31 vehicles nominated, this year we had over 100," Mr. Gibbons said.
"We also presented two special Awards - one recognising an outstanding contribution to motoring in New Zealand to Colin Giltrap and the other to the Traffic and Road Research Group (TARS) at University of Waikato
"For over 40 years Colin has played a key role in the motor industry, not just in New Zealand, but around the world. It is well known that he has been a very successful Kiwi businessman. What is not so well known is his selfless contribution to the community through generous support of numerous charities, including the Starship Children's Foundation."
"The other special award recognises the excellence of the work of the Traffic and Road Research Group (TARS) at the Department of Psychology at University of Waikato in the road safety area," Mr. Gibbons said.
