Hui Taumata: Maori in Industry Training
The Industry Training Federation has released a report on Maori in Industry Training to coincide with the Hui Taumata 2005. A copy of the report can be found at www.itf.org.nz
"There were over 26,000 Maori involved in Industry Training in 2003, and there will be over 40,000 Maori in 2007 as we approach the government's target of 250,000 people in Industry Training. , said Darel Hall Executive Director of the Industry Training Federation.
"Industry Training has been the quiet reformation in Maori education. Participation doubled between 2000 and 2003, and will double again by 2007".
The report shows Maori are succeeding through the full range of industries, with Maori having the highest participation rate of all ethnicities compared to their employment status.
The report also shows that Industry Training is picking up many Maori who otherwise have no or low qualifications.
There are case studies of ITO work and ITO learners to ground the statistical analysis.
"This is a stock take report that gives a sound analysis of Maori in Industry Training. It will help inform the debate as aspirations are cast for the next 20 years of Maori development", said Darel Hall.
