Mäori Scholarship Awarded
Statistics New Zealand has announced Aotea Gurden as the recipient of its 2005 Te Tari Tatau Mäori Scholarship. The
scholarship, which aims to build up Statistics New Zealand’s pool of potential employees and its organisational
capability, is offered each year to a Mäori undergraduate studying at a New Zealand university. Ms Gurden (Ngäti
Mutunga/Te Atiawa) is studying economics and statistics towards a Bachelor of Science at the University of Waikato. Ms
Gurden speaks te reo Mäori and has an excellent understanding of tikanga Mäori.
She previously worked for 10 years in the banking industry. Government Statistician Brian Pink said, “These scholarships
strengthen Statistics New Zealand's ability to produce relevant and comprehensive statistics for all New Zealanders. I
am pleased one of the previous recipients was successful in joining our graduate development programme, which trains
potential leaders for Statistics New Zealand.”
The scholarship has an annual value of $3,500 over three years and recipients are offered work in the department during
the university holidays. For further information, visit www.stats.govt.nz.
