The Herald maintains daily paper leadership
The New Zealand Herald continues to maintain its leadership position among New Zealand daily newspapers according to the
latest Nielsen Media Research national readership survey.
The paper remains the country's biggest metropolitan daily with an average readership of 590,000 people on any given day
and more than one million people every week. The Herald has now grown its market share to over 52 per cent of all
readers of metropolitan daily newspapers[2 .
The Weekend Herald continues to be the country's most well read weekend paper with 679,000 readers every Saturday. It
has nearly twice as many readers as any other weekend newspaper in the Northern Region.
The survey of 15,000 respondents covers the calendar year from January to December 2004 and measures the newspaper and
magazine readership habits of 3,124,000 New Zealanders aged 15 and older.
2004 has been a year of fruitful progress for the APN newspaper stable with the relaunch of the Weekend Herald,
repositioning of The Aucklander and the launch of the Herald on Sunday according to APN National Publishing CEO Ken
Steinke.
"The Aucklander is designed to complement the Herald and is showing extremely good results achieving the highest
readership of a weekly published title in the Auckland market.
"While Herald on Sunday figures won't be available for some time - the paper was launched only last October - we do know
we have substantially grown the Sunday paper market."
The Herald Online continued to show growth. The site attracted an average monthly audience of 1.1 million unique
visitors, 52 per cent ahead of the previous period.
