Total container volumes* decreased 3% to 696,711 TEUs for the 12 months to end-January 2005 (as compared to the 12 months to end-January 2004) and were down 3% on January 2004.
Full import container volumes were unchanged and full export container volumes were down 3% for the 12 months to end-January 2005. For the month of January, full imports and full exports dropped 1% and 4% respectively.
Transhipment** volumes fell 14% for the 12 months to end-January 2005 (as compared to the 12 months to end-January 2004) and were down 22% on January 2005.
Containers comprise approximately 70% of Ports of Auckland’s throughput and about 85% of business activity.
The drop in container volumes is due mainly to the loss of a shipping service in February 2004 that at the time represented 8% of Ports of Auckland’s container volume.
Breakbulk (non-containerised) volumes were up 6% to 4.9 million tonnes for the 12 months to end-January 2005. January 2005 volumes increased 14% on January 2004. Strong import vehicle volumes continue, with a record 21,324 imported vehicles in January.
* Container volumes are measured in TEUs (20-foot equivalent units – or the size of a standard 20-foot container).
** Transhipment containers are discharged at Auckland and reshipped on another vessel to international or other New Zealand destinations.
