Taxi's Public Role Saves The Day
Executive Director of the NZ Taxi Federation Tim Reddish says the role that Auckland taxi services have undertaken
during the stop work by Stagecoach drivers emphasises the importance of their role in the public passenger transport
sector.
Taxi services routinely work alongside bus, train and ferry services catering for passengers whose needs are not easily
met by the other forms of public transport.
Major taxi users are business travellers, special needs children, people with disabilities and senior citizens.
"When the buses are not available, the group which we cater for broadens enormously, and this is reflected in the busy
time which taxi companies have had today.
"Taxi services are frequently - but incorrectly - thought of as 'private transport', when they are very much part of the
public passenger service, as is promoted by the Government and the Ministry of Transport," Mr Reddish said.
