Car stacker a first for New Zealand
The installation of the country’s first-ever car stacker, or ‘tower park’, makes guest parking at the Bolton Hotel a
fast and efficient operation.
Built to hold 28 vehicles, the stacker is modelled on a Japanese design and was manufactured in Auckland by Powerpark
Ltd. Tower parks are commonly used in Asia, but the system installed in the Bolton is a first for New Zealand.
It works like an oval Ferris wheel, with vehicles parked on individual carriages. As each vehicle is parked, the stacker
rotates and when a vehicle is needed, it is delivered back to the ground at the press of a button in just 90 seconds.
All a guest needs to do is ask the car valet to park or deliver the car.
The car stacker, which is accessed at ground level, reaches the 10th floor of the 20-level building and was designed
specifically for the hotel development. Powerpark says that with limited ground area, and no space for a conventional
multi-storey car park, the space-saving stacker was the best parking solution for the hotel.
It is a quiet operation, emitting only a low hum when it is moving.
In addition to the car stacker, a car park in the basement of the Bolton caters for the hotel’s apartment
owner/occupiers. This provides room for 16 vehicles and is accessed by a car lift located near the entrance to the hotel
foyer.
