Saturday Night Fever Gets Audiences Jiving To The Disco Beat
AUCKLAND, November 1, 2004—Following hot on the heels of the sell-out season of MAMMA MIA! The Civic, THE EDGE® was once
again the chosen home, this time to the musical extravaganza that brought polyester flares and shiny disco balls back to
centre stage.
Close to 50,000 people relived the disco era of the seventies during the five-week Auckland tour. “It was a fantastic
season,” says Greg Innes, Chief Executive, THE EDGE. “To have two international touring musicals at our venues within a
few months of each other highlights that Auckland definitely has the ability to attract such high calibre shows,” he
says.
“THE EDGE® is Auckland’s premier entertainment precinct and Auckland audiences have an appreciation for excellent
quality international musicals,” he says. “The Civic, THE EDGE® is an ideal venue for a musical like this with amazing
acoustics and a stunning atmosphere. Aucklander’s love it and we look forward to bringing in more shows like this for
our audiences to enjoy.”
With 35 performances in Auckland, Saturday Night Fever brought in an estimated $7 million to the local economy. “With
shows of this size everyone benefits, from local retail outlets to restaurants and hotels,” says Mr Innes. Although the
number of ‘out-of-towners’ was less in comparison to the season of MAMMA MIA! – which was only performed in Auckland –
the season of Saturday Night Fever was well enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
The 30+ dancers and crew now travel to Christchurch and Wellington for the two remaining seasons in New Zealand.
