Insuring a Greener Fleet
Staff of New Zealand’s largest insurer IAG New Zealand, whose brands include State and NZI, will be teaming up this
weekend with children and parents from Blockhouse Bay Intermediate to plant more than 300 native trees on the school’s
property.
The occasion has been initiated as a part of IAG NZ’s involvement in the Sustainable Business Network’s GreenFleet
programme, a sustainable transport initiative designed to help businesses reduce the impacts of their vehicle fleet on
the environment.
But what has tree planting got to do with transport? One of the harmful greenhouse gases that vehicles emit is Carbon
Dioxide, and through GreenFleet businesses are provided with a unique opportunity to do something about it. Since trees
absorb carbon dioxide, GreenFleet co-ordinates the planting of native trees with local community groups.
“This isn’t only about doing something towards offsetting vehicle emissions – it’s a wonderful opportunity for
businesses to get out of office and do something that’s both practical and enjoyable in their community”, said Sarah
Burke, GreenFleet Project Manager.
“It also provides a tangible experience for businesses in restoring the beautiful biodiversity our country is renowned
for”.
GreenFleet has been running since May this year and has drawn the interest of a number of businesses ranging in size.
