New Editor for New Zealand Press Association (NZPA)
Nick Brown is to be the new editor of NZPA replacing John Crowley who has moved to a new position in the newspaper
industry. Mr Brown is the current News Editor.
Chairman of NZPA, Mr Julian Smith said today that Mr Brown’s experience in nearly all senior positions of the news
agency including a number of overseas postings made him ideally suited to assuming the role of Editor.
“NZPA is the backbone of the newspaper industry in this country – without the agency newspapers in all the cities and
towns would face much higher costs and would not have the same quality of journalism as they do,” said Mr Smith.
NZPA provides a seven-day week 24-hour service acting as both a clearing- house for news copy filed by the 24 member
newspapers and as an original source of news copy written by 40 staff journalists. NZPA also provides a feed to member
newspapers of international news through its contracts with Reuters, the US based Associated Press (AP) and Australian
Associated Press (AAP).
Chief Executive Lincoln Gould said Mr Brown had been with the agency for 21 years, working in London and Sydney offices
as well as managing a number of key assignments including the recent Olympic Games in Athens.
“He has had extremely wide experience in the very specialised area of news agency journalism from finance, to sports as
well as occasional stories into theatres of conflict including reporting on New Zealand peace keeping troops in Bosnia.
As News Editor for the past eight years Mr Brown has been responsible for much of the administration of NZPA and the
organisation of such events as election coverage.
Mr Brown’s appointment as Editor becomes effective on 1 November.
