Strong Aussie Dollar Sends Kiwis Shopping
Retail stores and hotels seem will be cashing in on the strong Aussie dollar for Kiwi travellers, said New Zealand's
largest travel retailer.
Flight Centre area leader Carlee McCaw said the exceptionally high Australian dollar has seen a surge in interest in
jaunts across the Tasman, particularly to shop or indulge.
"We've had a lot of clients choosing to take an early Christmas shopping weekend because the dollar is so high," she
said.
"And many are choosing to stay in more expensive accommodation because with the strong dollar they are slightly cheaper
than before."
The Australian dollar has risen dramatically over the last twenty years, from a low of 57 cents against the New Zealand
dollar in 1985 to highs of around 94 cents over the last month.
Ms McCaw said differences in the exchange rate affect a number of things when people travel, but what people tend to
notice most is in their shopping.
Travellers heading to Australia should notice that accommodation, local transport, eating out and entertainment amongst
the things they'll find a little cheaper with the strong currency rate, she said, including anything booked or purchased
before they go.
"With the highly competitive fares on the Tasman at the moment, Australia is more popular than ever."
