Telecom Proceeds With UBS Launch
Telecom has confirmed that it will be proceeding with the commercial launch of its Unbundled Bitstream Service (UBS) on
29 September.
The launch of the UBS service had been on hold for two weeks while discussions took place between Telecom and the
Commerce Commission.
“The 256k service previously announced was always intended as the first of a series of offerings. Telecom has clarified
with the Commission details of future service offerings, including higher download speeds and a delivery timetable,”
Telecom General Manager Government & Industry Relations Bruce Parkes said today.
“Telecom’s further offerings will include a 2 Mb download speed option. We believe that the suite of options will be
very attractive to our wholesale customers.
“This is all part of Telecom’s proactive wholesale programme which is a key part of achieving our target of 250,000
residential broadband customers by the end of 2005.”
Mr Parkes said Telecom’s service is a commercial offering that stands on its own two feet.
“We make no comparisons between our commercial service and the eventual shape of any regulated service. The reason for
this is that the details of any final regulated service can only be fully determined once the Commission has completed a
full regulatory hearing and heard submissions and evidence from interested parties.”
The planned launch dates for further UBS products are: • 512/128 Kb Business - March 05 • 1028/128 Kb
Residential and Business - May 05 • 2048/128 Kb Residential and Business - to be offered, date to be advised An updated
UBS User Guide along with regulated service designation and specification outline will be placed on the Telecom Website,
Mr Parkes said.
