Boat Show Awash With Action
The latest in pedal-powered yachts and new-release trailer boats will tempt serious boating fans and novices alike at the National Boat Show, 26-29 August
National Boat Show coordinator Aerlie Wildy said the event is awash with new things to see and do – and experience.
“This year’s National Boat Show is set to be one of the most entertaining yet,” Mrs Wildy said.
“In addition to the many boating retailers launching new models on to the market, visitors can take part in competitions, see jet boats in action, try a waterski simulator – or sit back and enjoy the atmosphere.”
A live jazz band will go a long way to boost the family atmosphere at the 2004 Boat Show. And because the whole family is invited to get involved, there is a “pint-sized pirates” competition for the children who could win prizes (including chocolate fish) at the Pier Stage, 1.30pm Saturday.
Lake Emmett at Mystery Creek Events Centre will be well-utilised at the event with family-friendly jet boats skipping around a short course.
Since 1975, Maxcraft New Zealand owner and operator Max Monk has been a jet boat enthusiast. His first prototype was initially intended for sale, but once the family had been for a ride, Max was told there was no way he would be selling it.
“The boats are very easy to drive,” Max said.
“They’re just so safe and that’s the beauty of them. And they’re quiet – you don’t get that big V8 roar.”
The boats can reach 40 miles-per-hour and are surprisingly quiet.
A pleasant surprise for the New Zealand boating public is the launch of the Arvor range of boats, debuting at the National Boat Show.
The Arvor 20 series II has a unique closed wheelhouse configuration, according to Gulf Group Marine broker Tony Trueman, with a walk-through transom. The Arvor 20 also features 85hp turbo-charged inter-cooled Nanni diesel, shaft drive, walk-round cabin – and is “trailerable”.
All visitors to the National Boat Show have the chance to tow away a fantastic boating package in the gate prize competition. A Ramco Boat, 90HP Yamaha outboard and Voyager Trailer is up for grabs, visitors simply need to fill in the entry form and answer the skill question on the back of their boat show ticket and drop it in the box located in the Tasman Sea Pavilion.
Tickets are available at www.nationalboatshow.co.nz, from Mystery Creek Events Centre ph 07 843 4497 or at the National Boat Show gates.

BOX STORY TO ACCOMPANY FEATURE:
HEADING: Hook your dad
Sons and daughters around New Zealand have the chance to nominate their angler dads with the National Boat Show Dad’s Catch competition.
They’re invited to mail in photographs of their dad and the one that didn’t get away to the National Boat Show with the fishy tale behind the catch. The winning entry will be rewarded a fantastic four-day fishing cruise aboard Cascade to the Ranfurly Banks with the team from NZ Fishing News.
In 2003, photos of Dads with their “catches” ranged from snapper, crayfish, trout, sharks and even a photo of Dad holding up Mum – because he said she was his best catch.
