Meat Board Act – End of an Era
The passing of the Meat Board Act is a satisfying culmination of Federated Farmers of New Zealand's long term involvement in producer board reform, said Ian Corney, Chairman of New Zealand Meat and Fibre Producers (NZMFP).
NZMFP is an industry group of Federated Farmers and represents sheep and beef farmers.
“It is very pleasing that Federated Farmers' concerns were acknowledged and taken up by the Primary Production Select Committee.
“Federated Farmers has strongly advocated for stronger protections around farmers' reserves and for farmers to be able to determine the future use of the Meat Board's reserves,” said Mr Corney. The Board has $100 million of reserves held on behalf of farmers.
Wins for the Federation include amendments requiring the Board to consult with levy payers on the initial reserves policy, and a clear provision that future Board liabilities can be funded through fees to quota holders rather than from reserves.
Reserves are also protected through provisions requiring that any decisions relating to reserves are only valid if a majority of the farmer elected representatives present support the decision.
“Farmers want a much greater level of transparency and accountability to be delivered through the new meat and wool industry structures. This legislation goes some way to delivering that outcome,” Mr Corney concluded.
