New Zealanders capture coveted international awards
IABC Announces 2004 Gold Quill Award Winners
Three New Zealand entries are among the winners of the 2004 International Gold Quill Awards, announced by the
International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Of the 920 entries received this year, 37 received top
awards for Excellence and 72 received awards of Merit.
Michael Metzger from Metzger Communications in Wellington won an excellence award in the member communications category
for his work with the New Zealand Post Superannuation Plan. Marie Hosking and Dee Crooks from NetworkPR, Auckland, won a
merit award for their media relations program for Barfoot & Thompson. Mike Tisdall from Insight Creative Limited in Auckland won a merit award for the 2002 and 2003 Lion Nathan
Annual Reports.
The New Zealand winners competed among peers in Argentina, Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Croatia, Hong Kong, Japan,
Mexico, Netherlands, Peoples' Republic of China, Philippines, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan,
Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States. Winners will be honored and winning entries on display during IABC's 2004
international conference in Los Angeles in June.
2004 Awards chairperson, Claire Watson from Regina, Canada, says IABC’s Gold Quill Awards program has been the hallmark
of excellence in business communication for more than 25 years.
“Those who won awards of excellence are among the top four percent of communication practitioners in the world and those
who won merit are among the top 10 percent. These projects are used to benchmark global excellence in communication.”
Ms Watson says entries from Asia Pacific are very well represented among the winners.
“Asia Pacific incubates innovative thinking in strategic communication planning and is a growing force within the world
of where our profession is going in the next decade.”
This year’s Blue Ribbon Gold Quill judging panel included top senior communicators from Australia, Canada, Mexico, New
Zealand, Switzerland and the United States, who judged the entries in San Francisco in March.
