Energy in Aotearoa
With the recent demise of Project Aqua, questions have been raised about the future of power in New Zealand. Are we at a
turning point in New Zealand’s energy history?
The Auckland Museum Institute have organized a symposium to inform and educate New Zealanders about the current trends
in energy demands, the ability of New Zealand to meet those demands, and the potential of new technologies such as wind
power and fuel cells to support future developments.
Guest speakers include Hon Pete Hodgson, Bruce Cole - General Manager Business Development for Genesis Energy, and Green
Party leader, Jeanette Fizsimons.

Session 1 - Wednesday 28 April, 7pm
The first session opens with a key note address from Hon Pete Hodgson who will talk about ‘Government, Ministry and CRI
Involvements’.
Chairman of the Electricity Commission, Roy Hemmingway, and chief executive of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation
Authority, Heather Staley, will discuss the implications of trends in energy demands for New Zealand and the planning by
the Electricity Commission to cope with current and future demands.
Session 2 – Wednesday 5 May, 7.30pm
The second session looks at new technologies. Bruce Cole from Genesis Energy takes a look at the Awhitu Wind Farm, and
will be joined by Alister Gardiner from Industrial Research Ltd who will discuss the potential, advantages and
practicalities of hydrogen fuel cells.
Session 3 – Wednesday 12 May, 7.30pm
The final session looks at the ethical, environmental and moral issues of meeting New Zealand’s energy needs. Chaired by
Professor Jacqueline Rowarth, guest speakers for the evening include Jeanette Fitzsimons, who talks about the green view
of energy sustainability, Steve Goldthorpe who will discuss a report produced by the Ministry of Economic Development on
the energy outlook to 2025, John Blakely from the Sustainable Futures Organisation and Jonathan Leaver, who will explore
differing scenarios for New Zealand’s energy future to 2050.
