Waterfront pickets called off after fishing trawler steers clear of Dunedin
The Maritime Union has announced that its planned pickets on the Dunedin waterfront on Friday 5 March have been called
off.
The Union had planned overnight pickets against Mainland Stevedoring who were to be working onboard the fishing trawler
'Janas.'
Maritime Union National President Phil Adams says the Union has been informed that the 'Janas' was no longer calling
into Dunedin to unload its current catch, and Mainland Stevedoring would therefore not be working it.
"We are pleased that the local companies have realized the depth of feeling of local workers against Mainland and have
made a sensible decision," says Mr Adams.
"We see this as a vindication of our stance in favour of secure local jobs, and would like to thank the local community
for all the support we have received."
Mr Adams says the Union would remain on alert for any future threat of Mainland working in Dunedin.
