Facelift for Popular X-TRAIL
Nissan has given its popular compact 4x4 a significant upgrade for 2004. Featuring a new look interior, stylish updates
to the exterior design and extra equipment, the X-TRAIL is now even better than ever.
The new interior incorporates a new ventilation system. Drink holders have been upgraded with a more robust design. A
multi box with hot and cool functions is also standard as well as an outside temperature gauge.
The ST receives an upgrade in seat material. A new easier clean, more dirt resistant material is now used. A new pattern
improves the appearance of the seats. The ST now also comes standard with a leather four spoke sports steering wheel and
a rear armrest with rear trunk-through.
Another bonus for ST buyers is the addition of cruise control. Previously only available on the luxury Ti model, cruise
control is now standard on both variants in manual and automatic guise.
Further additions to the top spec Ti model are front power seats both driver and passenger. X-Trail Ti still has an
electric tilt style sunroof, front fog lights and rear roof spoiler. Also additional are new black instrument gauge
faces that complement the new dash design.
Both models have external changes aimed at further refining the muscular and dynamic look of the X-TRAIL. Exterior
changes include a new rear bumper with new reflectors, new mesh grille design and new front bumper.
There is also a new alloy wheel. The new design with squared-off spokes adds a more substantial look to the X-TRAIL’s
stance. A new White Diamond exterior colour is also available.
Engine and driveline remain unchanged. The compact and powerful 2.5 litre petrol engine is retained. The engine produces
132kW @ 6000 rpm and 245Nm @ 4000 rpm. Transmission options are either a 4 speed automatic transmission or the
light-weight, double cone synchromesh 5 speed manual.
The X-TRAIL still sports the sophisticated all mode 4WD system which monitors driving conditions and engages 4WD when
required for optimal traction in all driving conditions ensuring the X-TRAIL is a competent performer on and off the
beaten track.
Safety upgrades have not been overlooked and the new X-TRAIL now also has active headrests on both front passenger and
drivers seats. The Ti now has driver and passenger side airbags. Both models retain front driver and passenger airbags,
front seatbelt pretensioners, and impact absorption zones. Both models get a three point rear centre seat belt and
centre headrest.
According to Nissan’s managing director John Manley, the X-TRAIL is a superb compact SUV and the sales figures reflect
this.
“We have been pleased with the success of the X-TRAIL to-date and expect the upgrade to lift sales even higher in 2004.
With these improvements the X-TRAIL will continue to be a great value for money option for people wanting a practical,
versatile, yet exciting SUV.”
Even with the added bonus of cruise control and substantial interior and exterior changes the retail prices of the ST
model remain unchanged at $39,995 and $41,595. For the Ti models the new changes, power seats and side airbags only
increase price by $400 over the old model. New Ti pricing is therefore $45,395 for the manual and $46,995 for the
automatic.
